About
Worker’s Ransom honey and hive products are locally produced by honeybees pollinating, and gathering nectar from, flowers within 10 miles of Geneva, NY. Honeybees tend to travel within three to five miles of their hive and we have honey from hives in Geneva and Phelps, NY at this time. The honey is raw and unpasteurized; sourced and packaged from individual, single hives- never mixed, combined, or diluted. When bottled, our honey is sometimes warmed to typical hive temperature (90-95 F) to ensure flow into bottles while retaining the natural benefits of the honey. Most pollen is 10-1000 microns in size, so we strain our honey at 600 microns to ensure beneficial pollen, enzymes, and minerals remain in the final honey product while less favored materials are removed.
Worker’s Ransom honeybee hives are managed and cared for by Sarah A. Meyer, native of Geneva, NY. Sarah first enrolled in a ‘Beginner Beekeeping Class’ in January 2014. She purchased her first hive the following spring. Through partnerships with nearby managed organic farms and gardens, Sarah’s hives are hosted locally; pollinating local gardens, meadows, fields, orchards, and forests. In 2019, Sarah became a contract beekeeper and now manages hives for Casella Waste Management and Wegmans Organic Farm. Sarah aspires to keep hives within the city limits of Geneva once the zoning ordinance allows it.
Where to Buy
Worker’s Ransom is a small, woman-owned honey business! All of the beekeeping, extraction, bottling, sales, marketing, and promotion is enjoyed by owner and beekeeper Sarah Meyer of Geneva, NY. Sarah manages 6-10 honeybee hives making honey production and availability fickle due to the nature of the bees, our weather and climate, disease, and rate of sales. Sarah prioritizes honey for the bees first, then for customer enjoyment and sharing. We are proud to provide honey from Geneva and Phelps, NY.
Worker’s Ransom honey is bottled by hand into 12 oz. and 6 oz. clear glass jars with a black lid. Each jar contains single-hive honey, meaning that the honey in your bottle is sourced from a specific hive and hive box (honey super) upon that hive. The honey is never combined or mixed with any other hive boxes from that hive or with any other honey from any other hive or hive location. The additional steps Sarah takes to ensure single-hive honey requires more time, organization, and attention to detail in the honey extraction and bottling stages in order to bring you a flavorful snapshot of when your honey was made by her honeybees. From the Hive: Sweeten Your Shopping This Season
Beekeepers have harvested their fall honey and hopefully had luck ordering bottles to fill with their local liquid ‘gold’. I’ve made efforts to ensure colony survival through winter by wrapping my hives with black tar paper, to provide an extra wind break and a bit of solar warmth; while also adding a shim under the …
